Learn to Crochet with Carol Meldrum in Marchmont – Sunday 22nd June

As knitting was always more accessible to me in the past, I never really managed to get into crochet, but having recently completed my first few crochet projects, which are not granny square blankets, but actual items and accessories I can wear, I am now totally hooked!

My first crochet project - "Emma Lace Scarf" by Simona Merchant-Dest

My first crochet project – “Emma Lace Scarf” by Simona Merchant-Dest

I can now see the benefits of being able to crochet, as you only need to learn 4 basic stitches, and the possibilities are endless. It is great for last minute gifts, embellishments for garments, jewellery making, toys, home accessories and also for finishing off projects. I also find it is great for using up odds and ends of wool and also single skeins of yarns that I have been collecting over the years. The great thing about crochet is that once you learn the basics, you can really see results quickly and you start building up confidence fast.

So I am really delighted to be able to fit in Carol Meldrum’s Learn to Crochet workshop here in Marchmont, Edinburgh on Sunday, 22nd June, 10.30am – 4.30pm. Carol is a very experienced tutor and designer based in Scotland, but travels widely around the country and the world teaching. The course is aimed at complete beginners or people who would like to refresh their basic skills.

The workshop price £50 / £55 includes a light sandwich lunch and wool, but you will need to purchase or bring along a 3.75mm or 4.00mm hook. For further information and online booking please visit:http://bookwhen.com/beinspiredfibres

LEARN TO KNIT using Modern Techniques

Be Inspired Fibres has now been opened for a month, and I want to thank all the lovely well wishers from both local Marchmont residents and visitors from afar, who have managed to find me and supported the shop. It is very quiet at the moment around Marchmont, since most families and students have gone away for the summer, but I have kept myself busy researching and planning classes and workshops for the autumn.

Tawny Owl

It is great to see that the yarn shop has re-awakened some people’s intentions to start knitting again. The shop aims to inspire people to be creative whether they have been mesmerized by the wonderful colours of the Crazy Zauberballs or seduced by the luxurious silky cashmere.

For those new knitters who prefer to learn in an informal, interactive and more social setting, rather than from youtube videos, Be Inspired Fibres will be hosting a series of designer-led knitting classes and workshops scheduled for September and October at the shop. You will also find a list of classes on another page, which I will update on a regular bases.

Barley hat

Oats Cowl

We start the season with Emily Wessel’s 3 x Monday evenings course – Learning to Knit using Modern Techniques based on the soon-to-be released patterns by Tin Can Knits.

You will also get to choose whether you want to knit a beautiful hat or a cowl using some Malabrigo worsted weight yarn.

Emily Wessel will guide students through a project from start to finish, knitting in the round and seamless, using circular needles and the magic loop technique or double pointed needles. When you have mastered these essential skills, they will be extremely useful for follow-on projects such as mittens, gloves, sweaters, fairisle and socks.

Immediate feedback from a teacher will help students gain confidence quickly and will help them spot and correct mistakes early. This course is highly recommended for either complete beginners, refreshers or improvers, who need some support to get them started. This class is scheduled for Monday evenings between 6.30 and 8.30 – Sept 2nd, 9th and 16th.

Introduction into Lace Knitting

As Emily will be away in October, we will try to fit in An Intro into Lace Knitting before she leaves. This course is a 2 week x 2hrs on Monday evenings, 23rd and 30th September, so if you are a confident beginner or improver, you may be interested in learning about basic lace knitting techniques, chart reading, life lines and blocking. If you book both Emily’s classes at the same time, you will get a 10% discount on the total amount.

New yarn shop opening in Marchmont, Edinburgh

    Believe and Achieve

A modern yarn shop concept quickly became a reality about 8 weeks ago, when I stumbled upon an office/shop unit, belonging to Albany Lettings in the Marchmont area of Edinburgh, near my kids’ school.

30 Marchmont Road

I have been searching for a studio to rent in the area for months, but things just didn’t work out. I never gave up hope of finding the right space in the right location and which was within my budget. I’d put out feeders and asked around, monitored gumtree at least 20 times a day!

So I was extremely lucky that 30 Marchmont Road appeared and fitted my criteria perfectly and I was ever so grateful and relieved that the landlord agreed to lease the unit to me after it was refurbished.

Front windows

I have to say that the shop looks amazing, it is bright and open with high lofty ceilings and big windows which are perfect for capturing the wonderful colours of the yarns.

Ground Floor
Setting up a shop, requires a certain amount of determination and hard graft, there are always going to be set backs and obstacles, but you just have to continue to believe in your business plan and goals. There is also a lot of luck involved, but if you do your research and continue to be positive, you are more likely to take advantage of those little opportunities that come your way.

Yarn festival and h+h Cologne

Yak at the Yarn Festival

Yak at the Yarn Festival

March was an incredibly busy month and I am relieved that I coped with both the Edinburgh Yarn Festival and the big international craft trade show in Cologne being so close together.

Be Inspired Fibres

Be Inspired Fibres

I completely surprised myself, normally, I would have been a nervous wreck: hair falling out; breaking out in a strange rash; worrying about every single detail and planning for every possible crisis scenario – a throwback to my days as a conference producer.

Edinburgh Yarn Festival

The Yarn Festival was really good fun though, it was so laid back and so well organised, I have to congratulate the organisers and the volunteers on their success, most of whom were from the Purple Pig Cafe knitting group in Tollcross, Edinburgh.

h+h Cologne

There wasn’t much time to reflect, as I had to re-focus almost immediately for another event which was taking place in Cologne.

h+h Cologne is an annual trade show for the leading European yarn and craft supplies manufacturers to showcase their new products and to take orders from retailers from all over the world. It is a very corporate affair with beautifully themed and very glamorous stands.

Natural and undyed

Natural and undyed

This is the third year that I have been organising the Lotus Yarns stand at the Cologne show, but this year I only had to fly from Scotland which made things a lot easier – no jet lag!

I would describe myself more of an East/West business culture facilitator, my Mandarin Chinese is not brilliant, but I understand Chinglish and international marketing and business practices.

I needed to be on the stand practically the whole 3 days, I knew the products inside out, because I have been working with them for the last three years, so it wasn’t difficult to demonstrate and explain the collection to potential buyers. I brought a long most of the projects that I had made for myself to the show, this really helped them visualize the potential.

Overcoming prejudices

It is not easy to build any brand, but when a company is of a Chinese origin, it immediately faces intensive scrutiny and questioning, which is totally understandable, considering the bad publicity China gets from the press, sometimes justified, but quite often it is just because of the “made in China” label that makes us prejudiced, before we have given it the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps this is one of many reasons why Chinese cashmere companies are keen to buy traditional but struggling European spinning mills.

Insight into the yarn business

All over for another year

Taking an exhibition stand at these international trade shows is very expensive and especially if you have to make the journey from China, but visibility and accessibility are both very important for any company big and small. Customers need to see and be able to touch samples and meet the company’s representatives.

Helping Lotus Yarns, does have its benefits, as I get to test out some of the beautiful yarns and from a personal perspective, I get insight into the international yarn business.

New distributors and patterns

It is good to see that Lotus Yarns is becoming more well known and to see old customers come back and re-order. Just seeing the faces and reactions of the show’s attendees when they touch the yarns is enough to make me feel that it has been worth the effort and stress. This year, Lotus Yarns has signed up Schmeichelgarne to distribute in Germany and Karen Noe Designs to distribute in Denmark. In fact, http://karen-noe.dk/ and her design team have come up with a truly beautiful pattern collection, which uses the complete range of Lotus Yarns. The patterns are currently in Danish, but will be translated into English later this year.

Sourcing products for Be Inspired Fibres

The show was a great place to source products and I have my eye on a few new brands I will be stocking. But firstly, I need to find a studio/office space, because I really need to have a bright space to showcase the yarns and to organise special events.

Starting up a new business – online

There is never a good time to start up your business, sometimes, you just have to go for it and to just simply get on with it.  These days you don’t have to sink a fortune into a retail or office space.  You can just start up an online business and be based anywhere at home or in a coffee shop.  It is amazing how technology, the internet and social media have transformed the business landscape and how we work.

My virtual office

My virtual office

For the past few months, I have been working on getting the structures together, the web site, the blog, the online shop, registering the company, sorting out a business bank account, researching suppliers and customers.

I must not forget, I am also still a house wife, so I still have to do the school run, escort the kids to their extra curricular activities, cook dinner, do the washing and the ironing, plus cleaning. It is a real juggling and balancing act!

Having the right attitude is crucial, life is about learning and I am enjoying the journey and the challenge.  I still have a lot to learn, but I have never been much of a techie, but putting together this blog, website and all the other social media tools has been very interesting, especially, as I am on a very limited budget and I am doing it by myself.

Being a knitter has really helped, as we know there are always a solution to a problem and we enjoy figuring things out, but also as a member of a few knitting groups, there is always someone who can help and fill in the missing pieces.

Social media and networking

Be Inspired Fibres

Be Inspired Fibres

Without a physical presence, an online business has to rely on other means of reaching people. Online social media is great for spreading the word, but it is also important to physically meet and see prospective customers to understand their preferences. I am therefore really grateful for the opportunity to exhibit at the Edinburgh Yarn Festival in a few weeks time. Shop update

Just in time for the Edinburgh show, the online shop is now opened for browsing and shopping. I can only do minor tweaks on the web site, but the tictail online shop solution, I am using is perfect, because of its simplicity and especially for a start-up like me.

A new year and a new beginning

BE INSPRED FIBRES

Finally, I have managed to get myself started on the blog scene and it is because I am beginning a new adventure into business and self employment. The whole process fills me with both fear and excitement, but I really do feel very passionate about knitting and selling wool. There is no going back now, I have to continue what I have started: the business is incorporated, the online shop is being prepared and I have signed up to the Edinyarnfest on Sat 16th March. It will be the launch date for “Be Inspired Fibres”. The festival would be a great starting point to showcase a selection of unusual yarns. I have to thank the organisers, because they have given me an impetus to get things moving, no more procrastinating.

The internet and social media have really changed how we reach out to people and to create communities of like minded people. Before embarking on this yarn business venture, I was a complete technophobe and dinosaur, but within a month, I have managed to put together a social media strategy and an online platform to showcase the yarn collection and it is now time to implement that.

Why wool and knitting – a background?

Cotton Fairisle Cardigan

Cotton Fairisle Cardigan

I learnt to knit when I was 7 years old from my mum and at school in Co. Down, N.Ireland. I remembered vividly always making things. I did stop knitting for a while and then only resumed after the birth of my second child in 2005. I remembered I was really nervous picking up the knitting needles again and in particular reading patterns, I was afraid that I had forgotten everything. But I soon got into the flow of things. Small toy projects were quickly followed by children’s garments and a subscription to Rowan, inspired me further to complete a fairisle cardigan. Knitting and buying wool immediately became an obsession, but it was also totally therapeutic, as it kept me busy in the evenings, as I was home alone with the kids most of the time, whilst my husband was working abroad.

Actually, it was while I was living in Beijing, China, that I got to know a Chinese cashmere yarn company and started to help them with distributing their yarns abroad and supplying the local SnB knitting group in Beijing, that was how I got involved in the yarn business.

The new company is called “Be Inspired Fibres”, because, I aim to supply knitters with a choice of unusual, hard to find and beautiful fibres and yarns, both undyed and dyed. I hope knitters will be inspired to make things which they will treasure and keep or to give as a special present. We are surrounded by so many pattern resources these days, and are totally empowered to be creative.

Currently uploading goodies onto the shop, http://www.beinspiredfibres.tictail.com. I will keep you informed when it is actually opened.
